There are several schools in Jefferson County that are hosting a field day today. Our son is participating in one of those. As we go through the years I am always amazed at how much growth takes place in these youngsters both physically and mentally. They are faster, stronger, and much more coordinated than they were last year. It is fun to watch. Your Personal Mover, Inc is also growing. Recently we added a 20 foot enclosed trailer to accomodate those smaller jobs you just don’t need a 24′ box truck for. it is equipped with all the same great equipment: furniture moving pads, dollies, appliance dollies and of course, 2 or our great crew members. It is the worst part of the move aside from the lifting and the unpacking.  Procrastinating on this task is a great way to make sure your move is a nightmare.  It is difficult to sort through things, pack things, just the thought of packing the kitchen with all those cupboards is enough to make some people run and hide.  Some people who are moving have a little voice inside their head that says “It’s ok, you can pack when the movers get here.”  DO NOT LISTEN TO THAT VOICE!  Movers are amazingly fast at what they do, which is move furniture from your house to the truck.  If you are trying to pack while they are doing that, you will find yourself with piles of stuff that the movers removed from the furniture so that they could move it and movers waiting for you to fill boxes.  Awkward!  The key to a quick, successful move is to start the sorting and packing early, even weeks before hand.  Remember, the more prepared you are, the quicker and the less expensive the move will be.  HAPPY PACKING!

1.  You found a mover through Google, Service Magic, Angie’s list, City Search, Dex Online or 123movers.com.  Did you check the company out at the Better Business Bureau?  They keep track of any complaint that comes in on any business whether that business is accredited by them or not.  Did you know that the BBB holds its members to a high code of ethics and business practices?  Yes, we pay for a membership and Yes they promote us and YES we strive to provide the best customer service possible to maintain the A+ rating we have with them.

2.  Our rule of thumb is “if it is 3 bedrooms or more, schedule an in person estimate”.  Even some 2 bedroom houses can require an estimate to accurately gauge how long the move will take or how much man power/truck space is needed to complete the move safely and in one day.

3.  Sounds to good to be true? It probably is.  During our 8 years of being in business we have heard so many stories from people who went with the “lowest” estimate, only to end up paying twice as much in the end,  due to hidden charges or insurance that didn’t cover the damage the movers left behind.  The best way to compare estimates is to look at cost per man per hour.

4.  What kind of cargo insurance does the moving company you are hiring carry?  The state of Colorado requires movers to carry insurance that equates to .60 per pound per item.  This means the copier the mover just dropped that weighs only 10 lbs is insured for $6.00.  Sometimes unexpected things happen during a move, make sure the mover will take care of it if it does.

5.  Are the people moving your things covered by workers compensation?  Workers Compensation insurance keeps the liability for any injury on the moving company.6.  Are the rates “all inclusive”?  Often we hear about really low hourly rates that sound great and then we read the fine print that talks about a stair charge or furniture protection charge or a mileage charge or a tape charge…While the initial rate sounds great, the “extras” can add up in a jiffy and before you know it, you are paying more than the hourly rate that included everything.

7.  Are the employees directly employed by the moving company or are they day labor that gets brought in everyday?  Moving is not rocket science but it does take some experience to completely load a truck efficiently and without damage.

8.  Beware the moving company that wants to give you a quote and get off the phone.  Did they ask any questions about the amount of furniture and boxes that need to be moved?  Do they have a clear picture of what you are moving and what your access is like at both the old and new locations?  Not all moves are created equal.  Make sure whoever is giving you an estimate has all the information.  If it seems like the company is in a rush, move on the next one.

9.  Once you have chosen a mover make sure you are on their schedule.  Call to schedule a time as soon as you know your moving date.

10.  Congratulations!  You have navigated your way through choosing a moving company.  Now, it is time to pack

Moving Insurance can be confusing.  While doing estimates we  encounter a lot of questions.  Your Personal Mover, Inc. carries full replacement value insurance.  We are fully insured above Colorado Requirements.  If something breaks we pay to repair the item or if it is damaged beyond repair we replace the item.  For example, a few months ago we loaded an outdoor vase that shattered while we were driving to the unload.  It was not reparable so we paid to replace it.  Things like this do not happen often but they do happen.  We want to make sure when it does, our customers know that the damage will be taken care of without delay.  The insurance cost is included in our rate.

Many companies use the terminology “fully insured”.  The state of Colorado requires all movers to carry insurance in the amount of .60 per pound per item.  If a company carries that insurance then they are “fully insured”.  This means that a 100 lb item is valued at $60.00 if it should get damaged.  Some companies will sell additional coverage and prices vary.

Other insurance that is important to know or ask about is workers compensation.  Workers compensation covers the crew should they get hurt while moving your things.  It is a protection for the consumer as well as the company.  Any medical costs associated with the injury are paid for by workers compensation.  This way the employee can not come after the homeowner for damages.

A couple of years ago at Christmas we were able to go on a deep sea fishing expedition. What an adventure! The boat rocked and rolled for two hours on the way to the fishing grounds. More than one person had an uneasy feeling in their stomach…me included! The fishing was a blast. The crew took care of baiting hooks and removing fish, they even cleaned it when we got back to shore. The customer service could not have been better! Have you noticed all of the garage sales, moving sales, and estate sales lately?  It is a sure sign that spring is here.  What do you do if you don’t sell everything?  There are several options.  Most know about Goodwill, A.R.C., and the Salvation Army.  There are other charities that accept donations around town as well.  When doing research for this article I found an unlimited number of charities in the Denver Metro Area.  Pick your favorite and do a search.  Give to a cause that is meaningful to you and if they won’t come to you to pick things up, we have a two hour minimum, one of the lowest in the metro area.

Here are a couple of our favorite places willing to take donations.  Remember used mattresses and box springs can not be donated.  Check with your trash service for a special pick up of those items.  Also, call ahead to make sure your favorite charity is taking donations and what they can and can not take.

Wishing Well Foundation is an organization in Denver that helps the homeless get off the streets.  Often they will help furnish a home for free if you qualify.  They will also come and pick up any furnishings, clothing, etc that you do not want.  To schedule a pick up call 303-892-5594.

Moving in the Colorado spring time can pose some challenges.  Take today for instance, we have a job scheduled in Castle Rock. That area could get 10 to 15 inches of snow.   If you were a moving company, what would you do?  Knowing that Colorado weather is difficult to predict, we have a system to make sure your move happens with minimal disruption to your schedule.  The steps we follow at Your Personal Mover, Inc are this.

1.  We watch the weather.

2.  If the weather looks like it could cause problems on moving day we call our customer to let them know that we are keeping an eye on the storm that may or may not hit their area and we ask if the customer has flexibility to move another day.  If they do we try to accommodate their schedule if not, we conduct the move rain, snow or shine.

Moving in the rain and snow can be done.  Here are some tips:

1.  Make sure your driveway and sidewalks are shoveled or plowed at both the old and the new location.  This helps keep the carpets cleaner and saves the moving crew time so they can complete your move as efficiently as possible.

2.  The moving crew will make every effort to keep your furniture and boxes dry.  They will also stage furniture pads at the entry way to keep the snow off of your floors.

3.   Consider using a product called carpet mask.  This can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowe’s.  It will help keep your carpets dry and snow or mud free.
